Kazi Nazrul University has conferred an honorary D.Litt degree on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

She visited the university in Asansol, West Bengal on Saturday to attend a special convocation.

Addressing the event, Hasina said: “A focal point of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s literary work has always been humanity. He dedicated his life fighting for the rights of the people, through his poems, writings and songs.

“On this day, I am paying tribute to the contributions of our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.”

Adding that in 1971, the Indian people sheltered and shared their food with more than 10 million refugees from Bangladesh, Hasina said the Bangladeshi people are grateful to their neighbouring country.

Hasina went to India on Friday on a two-day official visit and inaugurated the Bangladesh Bhavan, a symbol of cultural ties between the two neighbours, at Shantiniketan with her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

The two prime ministers also discussed bilateral issues.
