The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB)’s Model United Nations (MUN) Conference 2018 ended on Friday with a grand closing ceremony at the university’s Dhanmondi campus.
It was ULAB’s first MUN initiative, the university said in a statement.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu attended the event as the chief guest. The office-in-charge of UNICPRB Md Moniruzzaman was present as the special guest.
Other guests include Vice-president of ULAB’s Board of Trustees Kazi Anis Ahmed; ULAB’s Treasurer Professor Milan Kumar Bhattacharjee; Special Advisor to ULAB’s Board of Trustees Professor Imran Rahman; Head of the department of humanities Professor Shamsad Mortuza; and UNYSAB President Mamun Mia.
In his concluding speech, Bipu said: “To progress with sustainable development, we should ensure the SDG Goal 7 – affordable and clean energy in the context of Bangladesh.”
He urged the delegates to share their thoughts about the necessity of global private-public partnership to establish diversified energy resources in Bangladesh.
Md Moniruzzaman said Bangladesh is playing a significant role along with other countries in promoting the United Nations’ peacekeeping program.
Kazi Anis Ahmed said: “ULAB believes in the gesture of audacity of hope. Model United Nations simulation is simply practicing the ancient Chinese and Egyptian education philosophy which focus on skill development, leadership challenges, manifestation of unity and togetherness and the power of youth.”
The theme for the session was “Public and Private Partnership for Sustainable Development.”
The conference was attended by around 200 delegates of different member states of the United Nations under five committees.
The committees are: United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Special Committee for Bangladesh Affairs (SCBA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
The committees came up with five draft resolutions and each committee prepared draft resolution papers which were presented during the plenary sessions.
The closing ceremony was brought to an end by the Secretary General of ULAB MUN Conference 2018, Kazi Raihanul Bari Rifat – after an award ceremony where the best delegates and the executive board committee were recognized for their efforts.
