Bir Pratik Hamidul Haque dies

Decorated freedom fighter Bir Pratik Hamidul Haque has died at the age of 74. He died at Dhaka's Dr Sirajul Islam Medical College on Thursday. His son Obaidul Hoque Mintu said they had taken the body back to Tangail around 8am. Hamidul, hailing from Tangail’s Sakhipur upazila, had been suffering from various illnesses. The Dhaka hospital took responsibility for his treatment when news broke that the destitute freedom fighter could not afford treatment.

He was laid to rest in his family graveyard after the namaz-e-janaza Thursday afternoon. Hamidul fought in the Liberation War as part of the ‘Kaderia Bahini’ in Tangail. After independence, he was accorded the title ‘Bir Pratik’, the fourth-highest gallantry award.

He had a long career in teaching and also worked in several institutions. Hamidul was elected Sakhipur Upazila Parishad chairman in 1990. He is survived by wife Romesa Begum, four daughters and one son.
