Muhith: New strategy to recover BB heist money

The government will take new strategy after taking opinion from Bangladesh Bank to return of the money stolen by hackers from its central bank, Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said. The minister came up with the remark on Sunday at his secretariat office while replying to the reporters’ query on return of BB heist of $81 million from Philippines. “A year has gone but there is no progress so far for recovery of the BB heist money. So I have sought Bangladesh Bank’s opinion in this regard,” said Muhith. The minister also said Finance and Banking Division will hold fourth taskforce meeting on recovery of BB heist money next week. Former Bangladesh Bank governor Farashuddin had earlier submitted the probe report on the hacking and robbery of $81 million from the central bank’s foreign currency reserve account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in February last year. Most of the money was laundered through Philippine casinos and only about $15million was recovered from a gaming junket operator and returned to Bangladesh.
