Update : 24 Jan 2018, 03:41 PM
Law Minister Anisul Huq has stated that the Election Commission (EC) will take necessary measures to hold the presidential election as per the constitution. He made the statement while talking to the media after inaugurating a workshop for the lower court judges at the Judicial Administration Training Institute in Dhaka on Wednesday. “Awami League will nominate a candidate for contesting in the polls in due time,” the minister said. He added: “Election Commission will announce the schedule for the presidential polls. The constitution dictates that the election must be held within 90 to 60 days. So, the election should be held before February 23. “I am sure that the commission is aware of these matters, and will make a decision regarding the presidential polls very soon.”

Responding to a query about passing a law for seizing properties of war criminals, he said: “We have taken an initiative for implementing this law. We aim to pass the law in the next budget session of the parliament.” When asked whether Awami League has a candidate in mind for the presidential election, Anisul Huq stated: “The party policy makers will nominate a person. There is process for nominating a person for the presidential post, and the Awami League will follow the process to the letter.” He added: “The party has a nomination board chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, but I am not a member of that board. We will know who has been nominated after the board makes the announcement.” Addressing the issue of appointing a chief justice, the law minister said: “I have said it many times before, only the president can appoint a chief justice.”
