Charges against Bangladeshi diplomat in New York dismissed

A court in the United States has dismissed all felony charges against the deputy consul general at the consulate general of Bangladesh in New York. Md Shahedul Islam - who had limited diplomatic immunity - had been accused of forcing his former domestic help, Ruhul Amin, to work for his family in Queens without pay. He was also accused of assaulting the domestic help on several occasions.

On June 12 last year, the Bangladesh diplomat was indicted on grand larceny, assault, labour trafficking and other charges, and was ordered to surrender his passport when he appeared before Queens Supreme Court Justice Daniel Lewis. Islam’s lawyer Daniel N Arshack confirmed on Wednesday that his client is free to travel as the case is now closed. Consul General in New York Md Shameem Ahsan told UNB, quoting the lawyer, that Islam’s diplomatic passport had been returned by the court. A message left with his lawyer was not immediately returned, according to AP.
