'Govt yet to ascertain number of Rohingya refugees'

Update : 02 Feb 2017, 02:32 PM
“The BGB director general is yet to confirm the number of Rohingyas [who entered Bangladesh since October],” the minister told reporters after the conference of BGB commanding officers at Pilkhana on Thursday. He also mentioned that the exact number of Rohingyas living in Bangladesh for decades was also unknown. There are around 33,000 documented Rohingyas in two camps in Cox’s Bazar whereas more than 300,000 unregistered Rohingyas are staying in the coastal areas and other places. However, Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali told parliament Tuesday that around 67,000 Rohingyas had fled to Bangladesh since October last year due to the unrest in neighbouring Myanmar. According to a United Nations’ release of January 9, more than 65,000 Rohingya Muslims have left Myanmar since the conflict broke out. Ruling out the statistics of 65,000 Rohingyas’ intrusion, BGB Chief Major General Abul Hossain said in Chuadanga: “Not many Rohingyas could enter Bangladesh. We will push them back soon after discussion.” The two countries have been in a discussion for the repatriation of the Rohingyas living in Bangladesh.
