The Gazipur rail crossing, where Kolkata-bound Maitree Express train hit a car and killed five people on Sunday, was not manned and had no barriers either.
Railway's Pakshi Divisional Manager Ashim Kumar Talukder said the crossing in Kaliakoir upazila's Goalbathan was authorised.
“There was a caution sign near the crossing though,” he added.
Ashim said there are 102 authorised and 20 unauthorised crossings between Joydebpur and Bangabandhu Bridge (east).
“Only 17 are manned,” the railway official added.
Five people were killed on the spot when Kolkata-bound Maitree Express hit a private car on track on Sunday.
The railway has formed a four-member committee to investigate the accident.
Ashim said the committee, led by Pakshi Divisional Engineer-2 Md Asadul Haq, had been asked to file its report within January 13.
