“Kolkata-bound Maitree Express hit a private car when it was passing Sonakhali level crossing around 10:15am, leaving five passengers dead on the spot,” Kaliakoir OC Abdul Motaleb told the Dhaka Tribune.
The train dragged the car around 200 metres, he added.
The deceased were identified as Laki Akter, 30, Riva Akter, 8, Tahmida Khatun, 30, Talha, 12, and private car driver Minhaz Hossain, 40.
Train communication between Dhaka and Mymensingh, and Dhaka and northern districts have remained snapped since the accident as four wheels of the train derailed from the tracks, according to Joydevpur Station Master Md Shahidul Islam.
Several trains had been stuck at the nearby stations due to the accident, he added.
A relief train is trying to resume train operation, said Joydevpur Railway police station SI Dadon Mia.
