Youth allegedly tortured inside police station for bribe

Update : 07 Jan 2017, 03:56 PM
Two police officers and the man they allegedly tortured inside Jessore Kotwali police station only two days ago are now all claiming that such an incident never happened. Abu Sayeed, 32, was picked up from his home area of Talbaria College Para around 9pm on January 4 by a patrol team led by two officers in plainclothes, and released on Thursday evening. Police did not produce him before a court as per the law. It is alleged that the police officers tortured him and demanded Tk2 lakh for his release. The district police chief has requested local journalist leaders to take action against the reporters who first covered the matter even though a source in Kotwali police has confirmed that the two police officers in question – SI Nazmul and ASI Hadikur Rahman – have already been withdrawn from their duties. “Police picked me up on Wednesday from a tea stall. They wanted to know whether I was involved in drugs business or not,” Sayeed told reporters on Friday. “They released me around 8pm the following day after finding no such evidence,” he said. “They did not torture me,” Sayeed claimed. Sayeed also said that the youth in the Facebook photo was wearing jeans, but that he was wearing a lungi at the time of his arrest. "Moreover, I do not have any T-shirt like the one in the photo." The family members of Sayeed denied having paid the police Tk50,000 for his release when contacted by the Dhaka Tribune on Friday.  Jessore Two members of Abu Sayeed's family are seen standing in front of their house Photo: Touhid-Uz- Zaman Refuting the allegation of torture and bribery, SI Nazmul told the Dhaka Tribune that he had been staying in Dhaka for the last two days, while his colleague ASI Hadikur denied the events had taken place. “No such incident happened. Journalists are being misguided by wrong information,” he said. The alleged victim’s elder brother, Atiar Rahman, also claimed that the police had not tortured Sayeed or taken any bribe, while his younger brother Ashikur Rahman claimed that the photo was not of his brother. Sayeed’s wife, Bilkis Khatun, agreed. However, many locals including Noapara UP Member Asmat Ali Chaklader identified the youth on the photo as Sayeed, and claimed that Sayeed’s family is afraid to say the truth after being threatened by the police. "There are allegations against Sayeed that he is involved in yaba trading," Asmat said. "Earlier, he used to trade phensedyl." Kotwali police station OC Ilias Hossain claimed that it was an old photo and that SI Nazmul has been staying in Dhaka for giving deposition in a case. "The allegation placed against him is not true," said OC Ilias.
Police Superintendent Anisur Rahman formed a two-member probe committee on Friday. The members are Additional SP Shahid Mohammad Sarawar and ASP (Ka circle) Naimur Rahman. "Proper action would be taken against the duo if the allegation is found to be true," said Anisur. SP Anis reportedly told local journalist leaders that the allegation was baseless and requested them to take action against the journalists who accused the police of torturing a person and taking bribes.
