Blue Economy Cell starts its journey

The cell was inaugurated by State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid at Petro Centre in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar, where its office has been set up. The BEC will be operated by 25 officials from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division and Bangladesh Navy who have been appointed on deputation. Additional Secretary Golam Fakhruddin Ahmed Chowdhury was made head of the cell. At the inauguration ceremony, Nasrul Hamid said as the next two years were very important for the Awami League from political perspective, the government has been planning to make some “visible success” in the coming six months in implementation of development projects in the energy sector. Energy and Mineral Resources Secretary Nazimuddin Chowdhury said: “Though we won the maritime territory a long time ago, there was no achievement in blue economy. So the cell has been set up to collect and manufacture mineral resources.” The cell will be acting like an adviser and coordinator and multi-disciplinary works such as collecting ocean fisheries resources, hydrocarbon resources and exploration of tourism opportunities will be held from the cell mainly.
