NHRC chairman: Fires need to be investigated, this cannot go on

Update : 04 Jan 2017, 01:11 AM
Reazul said: “The incident definitely needs to be investigated. Whether it was preplanned or an accident, either way the guilty party needs to be held accountable.” He made the statement yesterday, after visiting the site of the fire. The investigative committee should be comprised of not only police and fire services, but also DNCC officials and traders, he added. The NHRC chairman went on to discuss the flurry of fires that have taken place in recent memory, stressing that they need to be resolved. He said: “Recently, there have been a number of fires in different places. Sometimes slum houses were burned and sometimes shops were burned. This cannot go on. Stern action must be taken against the culprits if they are arson attacks. If not a planned attack, the authorities must bring to book the officials whose negligence led to the fire.” Furthermore, Reazul urged the government to compensate traders who had suffered on account of the Gulshan DNCC market fire. A massive fire broke out in the Gulshan 1 DNCC market around 2:30am on Tuesday, causing parts of the building to collapse, including the kitchen market, and damaging several hundred shops. No casualties have been reported so far and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Shop owners and staff of the DNCC market laid the blame on city corporation authorities.
