Govt to build 150,000 sheds for Rohingya refugees

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya on Wednesday said the government would ensure all sorts of humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya people.

Supervising officers have been appointed for 20 blocks of Kutupalong Rohingya camp to facilitate humanitarian assistance activities, Maya said while speaking at a meeting at the Cox's Bazar Circuit House.

Maya said the government will build 150,000 sheds with the assistance of local and foreign NGOs for the Rohingya refugees.

70,000 sheds have already been erected, he added.

It was also decided in the meeting that one administrative unit and one warehouse would be set up in each of the 20 blocks of the refugee camp, to smoothly provide humanitarian services to the Rohingya people.

"We have already appointed officers for each of the 20 blocks of Kutupalong camp to supervise the overall humanitarian efforts for supporting the Rohingyas, Maya said.

The officers will be entrusted with the responsibility of assisting the district administration and army to distribute reliefs, building sheds for accommodation and ensuring medical services, sanitation and pure drinking water along with looking into the security matter.

"The officers will stay in camp areas round-the-clock and assist the people concerned in registering the names of the Rohingyas." he added.

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave them (Rohingyas) shelter on humanitarian grounds and they will be given assistance required for their survival," Maya said in the meeting.

The minister also asked the authorities concerned to remain vigilant against any attempts of the Rohingya people to spread out from the camp.

Several government initiatives on providing assistance to Rohingya refugees were discussed in the meeting.

The Rohingyas, who are living scattered in different places, will be brought inside the camps soon.

There are plans to set up a new fire station in the camp area very soon.

Bangladesh Army and LGED are working to build 27 kilometers stretch of road in the camp area.

The government has already set up 36 community hospitals and they have already provided health care to 5,000 pregnant women. 70,000 people have also been vaccinated.

Besides, Public Health Engineering Department is planning to set up 1,900 sanitary latrines and 1,528 tube wells, while 17,500 more latrines are under construction.

Fourteen mobile water treatment plants and seven water trucks are supplying pure drinking water to the camp round-the-clock.

The registration of 61,000 Rohingya people has already been completed. About 7,000 to 8,000 people are registering their names every day, the meeting was informed.

A new police outpost would be set up in the camp area and adequate Ansar members will be deployed to maintain the low and order situation, the local administration announced at the meeting.

Lawmaker Asikullah Rafique, Secretary of the Relief and Disaster Management Ministry Md Shah Kamal and Commissioner of Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) Abul Kalam, were present at the meeting among others.
