Victory Day celebrated with fanfare, festivity

To mark the day, different organisations, including government, semi-government, autonomous bodies, educational institutions, political parties and professional bodies organised different programmes honouring the national heroes of the Liberation War, waving national flags, singing patriotic songs and calling for defeating militant forces and those who are trying to foil the trials of war criminals while resisting all kinds of communal force. Khulna district administration celebrated the Bangalees’ glorious victory over the Pakistani occupation forces, pledging to establish a non-communal and prosperous Bangladesh with the spirit of the Liberation War. Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdus Samad hoisted the national flag at Khulna Zila School Ground and took salute from the parade. Khulna Shishu Academy organised an art and a painting competition for children on the occasion. A discussion meeting and a reception to the freedom fighters was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. People from all walks of life placed wreaths at the Gallamary monument on the day at 6 am. Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches and other religious institutions, seeking divine blessings for peace and progress of the country. Improved diets were served at all hospitals, orphanages and jail to mark the day. In Chittagong, Minister of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Islam BSc and State Minister of Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury was first to place wreaths at the Shaheed Minar. Immediately after, Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation AZM Nasir Uddin, Awami League Chittagong city unit led by its President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and General Secretary AZM Nasir Uddin, Chittagong zilla Parisad Chairman MA Salam, Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Ruhul Amin, Deputy Inspector General of Police(DIG), Chittagong range Safiqul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong, Shamsul Arefin, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Iqbal Bahar, BNP Chittagong City unit president Dr Shahdat Hossain and hundreds of socio-cultural organisations placed wreaths. The northwestern region also celebrated the Victory Day amid fanfare with districts under Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions staging various events to pay homage to the 1971 Liberation War martyrs and veterans and recall the history of Bangladesh’s emergence. A 31-gun salute stages in police lines in the region heralded the day while political, social, cultural, professional and trade organisations and educational institutions placed wreaths at Shaheed Minars to pay tributes to the 1971 heroes. The programmes also included hoisting of the national flag atop public and private buildings, illumination and decoration of road islands, roadsides and educational institutions. Screening of documentaries on life and contributions of Bangabandhu, Liberation War and successes of the present government, friendly football matches, sports competitions and cultural functions were other programmes to feature the celebrations. Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches, pagodas and other places of worship. Improved diets are being served at hospitals, jails, orphanages and vagabond centers on the occasion.
