Youth burnt alive in Shahjahanpur slum fire

A young man was burnt to death as a fire erupted in Shahjahanpur slum in Dhaka early Saturday. The deceased is rickshaw-puller Md Shipon, 30, son of Kitab Ali, from Araihajar area in Narayanganj district, police say. Family members of the victim filed a murder case with Shahjahanpur station. Ataur Rahman, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, said the fire broke out in a shanty of the slum around 3:50am. The fire also burned down a part of a furniture shop adjacent to the house. Being informed, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze within 25 minutes. Later, the firefighters recovered the charred body of Shipon from the house, said Abdul Mabud, officer-in-charge of Shahjahanpur police. “We are investigating the incident for any sign of foul play,” added the OC.
