Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has pushed back 60 Rohingyas trying to enter Bangladesh via the Naf River to escape violence in the Rakhine state of Myanmar.
"We raided four different points of the river around 7:30am on Friday," said Teknaf 2 BGB Commander Lt Col Abujar Al Zahid. "The Rohingyas were on six boats."
Thousands of Rohingyas have been trying to flee into Bangladesh and China in the past few weeks after the Myanmar army launched anti-insurgency operations in the Rakhine state following militant attacks on its border outposts that killed nine policemen on October 9.
Rights activists say more than 100 people have been killed and over 30,000 have been displaced since.
Myanmar and its army have denied accusations by Rohingyas and rights groups of raping women, torching houses and killing civilians during their operations.
The latest violence is the most serious since the 2012 communal clashes.
The Rohingya population of Myanmar numbers about a million but Naypyidaw does not recognise them as citizens.
Bangladesh has tightened border security to prevent an influx of refugees. There are 30,000 registered Rohingyas in two refugee camps in Cox's Bazar. The UN on Wednesday said more than 10,000 Rohingyas had entered Bangladesh in recent weeks.
Bangladesh insists that the Rohingyas must return to Myanmar.
