A smart speaker, incorrectly labelled as Google Home, intervened in a case of domestic violence by calling the cops and saving the victim in New Mexico recently.
Eduardo Barros, a Mexican citizen, asked his girlfriend, "Did you call the sheriffs?" while threatening her with a gun during a fight. The smart speaker interpreted Eduardo’s question as a request to call emergency services and called 911, reports the Engadget.
The emergency service officials overheard the brawl and called negotiators and a SWAT team to the spot. They later arrested Barros over assault, battery and firearms charges after a stand-off.
Eduardo’s girlfriend was hurt during the fight. Police confirmed that the fight could have been much worse and the situation could have spiraled out of control had the smart device not misinterpreted a request to call the cops.
Mexican County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales believes that the command helped the cops to save the lives of Eduardo’s girlfriend and her daughter.
Although the smart devices can help authorities by providing evidence in criminal cases, but police do not welcome such smart speakers or devices with open arms throughout the world.
