In a loathsome incident, a father of five daughters has allegedly ripped open the stomach of his pregnant wife in Budaun area of India’s Uttar Pradesh.

The incident happened on Saturday evening, when he allegedly tried to find out if she was going to deliver a son this time, reports CNN-News18.

Pannalal slit the stomach of his wife, aged around 35, with a sharp-edged weapon in the Nekpur locality under the Civil Lines police station area, injuring her seriously, said Superintendent of Police (SP-City) Pravin Singh Chauhan.

An FIR has been lodged and the husband has been arrested, the SP said, adding that the reasons behind the crime are being looked into.

The family of the woman, who was rushed to a Bareilly hospital in a serious condition, alleged that Pannalal wanted a son and committed the crime to know if it was male or female fetus.

The locals immediately rushed the woman to the district hospital from where she was sent to the Bareilly hospital in a serious condition.

The woman is said to be six to seven months pregnant, police said.

India has seen a dwindling number of girls, according to a government survey released in July, 2019, suggesting that illegal abortions of female fetuses continue despite a ban and government efforts to save girl children.

It showed that India's gender ratio, or the number of females per 1,000 males, was 896 in the period of 2015-17, down from 898 in 2014-16 and 900 in 2013-15. The number was 943 in the last census of 2011.

Indian laws ban doctors and health workers from sharing an unborn child's sex with the parents, or carrying out tests to determine the child's gender. Only registered medical practitioners are allowed to perform abortions.

Yet female feticide is common in parts of India. Daughters are often seen as a burden, with families having to pay dowries when they marry, while sons are prized as breadwinners who can inherit property and continue the family name.
