The DSHE order that granted Arun the leave also granted a 21-day holiday from June 1 to June 21 – or until the date of handover – to Narayanganj Govt Tolaram College Political Science teacher Nasima Begum for the purpose of carrying out her Umrah pilgrimage.
When contacted, Nasima Begum said: “I saw that Prof Arun Chandra from Gopalganj also received his holiday grant in the same order, but I do not know him.”Although religious discrimination is as bad as any kind, the Education Ministry took equality a little too far when Arun Chandra, a Hindu accounting professor at Gopalganj’s Government Bangabandhu College, was given 50 days of leave for the purpose of performing the Hajj pilgrimage.
Widespread criticism ensued after the order was made public on Facebook, with many questioning why or how a Hindu man would ask for or receive leave for Hajj.
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) approved the leave via an official order. The order states that the teacher is eligible for leave for a total of 50 days from the date of handing over his duties at any point between July 25 and November 12.
When asked about the matter, DSHE Deputy Secretary Murshida Sharmin said: “I will be able to confirm the matter on Thursday.”
