Emmy Awards to leave broadcast TV after 79 years

The Emmy Awards will stream exclusively on Prime Video from 2027 to 2032 under a new six-year agreement with the Television Academy.

The deal marks the first time in the awards’ 79-year history that the ceremony will not air on broadcast television. The event will be available globally and free to watch, including for viewers without a Prime subscription.

Prime Video may also stream other Television Academy programmes, including the Hall of Fame and Television Academy Honors ceremonies. The platform for the Creative Arts Emmys has not yet been announced.

Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego told The Hollywood Reporter that the agreement offered an opportunity to rethink the broadcast model rather than simply renew the previous deal.

Abrego said the annual rotation among the four major US broadcast networks often meant starting over with a new partner, affecting producers, creative decisions and brand partnerships.

The Emmy Awards have previously aired on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. The 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards aired on NBC on September 14, with Peacock serving as the streaming partner.

The move follows the Academy Awards’ planned transition to YouTube in 2029. ABC will continue broadcasting the Oscars through 2028.
