Hollywood stars competing for Cannes top prize

In the  76th instalment lineup for the Cannes Film Festival, 19 films are competing for the Palme d'Or, including a record six films directed by women. The festival took place at the French Riviera from May 16 to May 27.

Ruben Östlund, who won his second Palme d'Or last year for “Triangle of Sadness”, is heading the jury this year. Some of the movies competing are:

1. “Asteroid City”

The Wes Anderson project is one of the two American directors in this year'slineup. It follows a convention of “Junior Stargazers” that is interrupted by a world-altering event. The cast includes Tom Hanks, Edward Norton, Jason Schwartzman, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton and Scarlett Johansson.

2. “La Chimera”

Italian director Alice Rohrwacher's movie is about a group of archaeologists dealing historic artefacts on the black market. The cast includes Isabella Rosselli and Josh O'Connor. 

3. “The Passion of Dodin Bouffant”

The passion of romantic-drama of Tran Anh Hung is centred on a celebrated cook and the gourmet she has been working at for over 20 years. The film stars Juliette Binoche.

4. “May December”

The Todd Haynes latest is about how decades after a couple married, their large age gap had garnered huge press attention. The cast includes Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman. 

5. “Firebrand”

The movie about the marriage between King Henry VIII (Jude Law) andQueen Catherine Parr (Alicia Vikander) was directed by Karim Aïnouz.
