Remembering Sudhin Das

Tributes have been pouring in for prominent Nazrul exponent Sudhin Das, who died at a city hospital on Tuesday at the age of 87 due to complications. People from all walks of life gathered on Friday at the capital’s Central Shaheed Minar to pay respect to the legendary singer and researcher. Organised by Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, the tribute took place from 11am to 1pm and included his colleagues, well-wishers, eminent cultural personalities and top government officials, including the likes of singer Subir Nandi, Fokir Alamgir, theatre activist Ramendu Majumdar and others. A number of literary and cultural organisations, including Nazrul Institute and Udichi, also paid tribute to the Ekushey Padak winner artist. Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, principal secretary to the prime minister, paid tribute to the artist on behalf of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, while AAMS Arefin Siddique paid tribute on behalf of the University of Dhaka.Sudhin Das’ body was later cremated at the Postagola cremation ground. Born in Comilla town’s Talpukur in 1930, Sudhin Das is often marked as one of the frontrunners of the Bangla music scene who immersed himself in music during his graduate years. He enrolled as a regular Nazrul Sangeet performer at Pakistan Betar in 1948. After the death of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, he started setting down the original notations of Nazrul’s songs from gramophone records with the help of his wife Neelima Das, who is also a prominent Nazrul Sangeet artist. The Nazrul Institute has published 16 books with the original notations of Nazrul Sangeet of Sudhin till date, while Nazrul Academy has published five others. He is also credited for his contribution to Lalongeeti.
