Google Doodle marks 92nd birth anniversary of singer Feroza Begum

Today is the 92nd birth anniversary of legendary singer Feroza Begum who had immense contribution in popularizing Nazrul Sangeet in Bangladesh and India.

Google created a new doodle to celebrate the day and honour the iconic figure of Bangla music, and today's Google homepage shows a doodle that depicts Feroza Begum sharing her voice with her audience.  

Feroza Begum was born born in Gopalganj District on 28 July, 1926 to Mohammad Ismail and Begum Kowkabunnesa. 

Her music career began in 1940. Feroza Begum was in sixth grade when she first sang on the All India Radio. She met national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the age of 10 and became his student. 

Throughout her life, she was honoured with many awards including Nasiruddin Gold Medal, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Gold Medal, Best Nazrul Sangeet Singer Award, Nazrul Academy Award, Churulia Gold Medal, and countless others.Feroza Begum married singer, composer, and lyricist Kamal Dasgupta in 1956. Today is Kamal Dasgupta’s 106th birth anniversary as well. 

Two of their three sons, Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed are musicians.

When contacted, Feroza Begum’s son and musician Shafin Ahmed said : “At first I was very surprised to see the doodle last night, it was very unexpected.”

“But this is a proud moment for us, for my family, and for the entire nation- I appreciate  Google for taking the initiative to honoring Feroza Begum.”

Feroza Begum died on September 9, 2014.
