Chief Adviser calls for expedited resettlement of Rohingyas

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has underscored the need for expedited third-country resettlement of the Rohingyas living in Bangladesh.

The chief adviser made the call after he met officials of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at his office in Dhaka on Sunday.

The IOM chief of mission in Bangladesh, Abdusattor Esoev, gave an overview of the resettlement of Rohingyas to developed countries, including the United States.

Washington has reaffirmed its commitment to resettle thousands of Rohingyas in the United States, but the process has not been accelerated.

The chief adviser asked IOM officials to fast-track the process.

He told senior Bangladesh officials that resettlement should be easy, regular and smooth.

It should be the easiest of processes, he told officials of the IOM and the Bangladesh government.

The IOM Bangladesh mission chief said the resettlement of Rohingyas resumed in 2022 after a gap of 12 years, but only this year did the process gather some pace.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin, Home Ministry Secretary Mohammad Abdul Momen and IOM Deputy Chief of Mission Fatima Nusrath Ghazzali, among others, were also present during the meeting.
