Uproar over smart (NID) card of Rohingya killed in 'gunfight'

Rohingya national Nur Mohammad, a prime suspect in Juba League leader Omar Faruk's murder case was a national identity card (NID) holder of Bangladesh.

Mohammad, an alleged ringleader of a robber gang and a resident of Jadimora Rohingya camp in Nhilla union of Teknaf, was killed in a gunfight in Cox's Bazar on Sunday when police took him to raid a hideout in the hills, police claimed.

Although a Rohingya, he was legally a Bangladeshi citizen as the Election Commission gave him a smart NID card. The smart NID card names him as Nur Alam. He is registered under Chittagong district instead of Cox's Bazar district.

When asked, Election Commission NID wing Director General, Brigadier General Mohammad Saidul Islam, told reporters that they came to know about the incident on Sunday.

“It is also a question from our side on how a Rohingya robber became a voter. We will form a committee within a day or two to look into the matter. People involved with it will be punished,” he told reporters at his office.

Earlier, Director Operations of the NID Wing, and Joint Secretary, Md Abdul Baten told Dhaka Tribune that the Rohingya people were trying to become voters in Bangladesh, and some unscrupulous local individuals have been assisting them.

"They even try to get them married to locals in a bid to make them citizens," he said.
