Govt cuts diesel, kerosene prices by Tk2.25 per litre

The government on Sunday set the automated retail prices of petroleum fuel for the month of April with effect from Monday.

As per the new price, diesel and kerosene will be sold at Tk106 per litre instead of the previous price of Tk108.25, lowered by Tk2.25 per litre.

The prices of octane and petrol have been kept unchanged at Tk126 and Tk122 per litre, respectively.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division set the new automated price through a gazette notification as per the government decision.

The first automated price came into effect on March 7.

In issuing the gazette notification in this regard, the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, in a clarification, said that the new prices have been in line with the prices of petroleum on the international market.

Earlier, the government issued a “Fuel Pricing Guidelines” through a gazette notification on March 1 to set an automated price for petroleum fuel across the country.

It said the local prices will go up and down in line with the international price, and every month, such prices will be announced by the government for a one-month period.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has highlighted concerns regarding the price of fuel oil. Currently, diesel is priced at 90.76 Indian rupees or Tk130.69 per liter (1 rupee = Tk1.44) and petrol at 103.94 Indian rupees or Tk149.67 per liter in Kolkata, India, which exceeds the prices in Bangladesh.

It's worth noting that 75% of the fuel oil utilized in the country is diesel. The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) regularly adjusts the prices of jet fuel used in aircraft and furnace oil used in power plants. Additionally, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources determines the prices of diesel, kerosene, petrol, and octane.
