Chevron Bangladesh employees to stage human chain Wednesday

Organised by Chevron Bangladesh Employee Union (CBEU), the human chain will take place in front of Chevron Bangladesh's head office in Dhaka. Earlier on Monday, CBEU leaders held a press conference at National Press Club demanding that the company scrap its plan to sell the gas fields and continue operations in Bangladesh. “Our aim during this hard time is to inspire all the workers to put pressure on Chevron to continue gas production and distribution from the three fields,” said CBEU President Nasim Aziz. He said by announcing their decision to sell off the company assets, Chevron authorities had pushed around 600 workers toward an uncertain future.

“The future of the company and our job security is at stake,” he said. “We do not want to live in uncertainty; we want to concentrate on our work. We hope that the authorities will take initiatives regarding our demand.” The Chevron staff also staged a peaceful protest in Dhaka as well as at Bibiyana, Jalalabad and Moulvi Bazar gas fields in Sylhet on February 12 by wearing black badges to press home their demands. Chevron announced in 2016 that it would exit the Bangladesh market and sell off its operations. Chevron Bangladesh gas field assets – reportedly valued around $2 billion – are up for sale. A Reuters report identified Zhenhua Oli, a subsidiary of China’s defence industry conglomerate Norinco, as a potential buyer of the oil giant’s Bangladesh assets.
