23 BNP-Jamaat men sent to jail in Rajshahi

Police have nabbed 23 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-Islami in a special drive from different parts of Rajshahi district.

They were arrested in several drives conducted from Saturday to early Sunday, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) sources said.

Of the arrestees, nine were Jamaat leaders and activists and six were identified as BNP activists, confirmed Rajshahi Police Superintendent Alamgir Kabir.

The Jamaat arrestees included Harun-ar-Rashid, Jamaat-e-Ameer of Bashudebpur union of Godagari upazila.

Eight activists were held from the city’s Motihar, Boalia, Shah Makhdum and Rajpara police stations, confirmed assistant commissioner of RMP and also its spokesman Ifte Khayer Alam. The arrestees included five BNP men and three Jamaat activists.

The arrestees were sent to jail after producing before a Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Rajshahi in the afternoon, confirmed Alam.

They were shown arrested in different cases filed over arson, sabotage and destruction of public properties, Alam continued.

When contacted, RMP Commissioner Muhammad Shamsuddin told the Dhaka Tribune that aim of such sort of drives was to resist the acts of sabotage in the name of blockade, which would be kept continued in the future.

On Saturday, 40 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat were nabbed and sent to jail.
