No remand, Fakhrul to be quizzed at jail gate

A Dhaka court yesterday sent BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to jail in connection with a case filed on charge of provoking party supporters towards vandalism and arson.

Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Tareque Mainul Islam Bhuiyan directed the investigation officer of the case to interrogate the BNP leader, detained on Tuesday, at jail gate within 10 working days.

The case was filed against 29 BNP leaders including Fakhrul with Paltan police for inciting vandalism and arson attacks in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital on January 4.

Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Khandakar Jahangir Hossain produced Fakhrul before the court seeking 10-day remand. His prayer stated that they needed to interrogate the BNP leader to know motive behind the attack.

The BNP spokesperson is now facing six cases – four with Paltan police, one with Motijheel while another with Chawkbazar police – filed on January 4 and 6, his lawyer said adding that the government had filed 78 cases against his client.

Seeking his bail, defence counsel Md Sanaullah Miah claimed that Fakhrul had been ill and that his doctor suggested bed rest for 15 days. “But the government arrested him to foil the political movement.”

According to the case, some miscreants vandalised and torched New Vision city Paribahan bus in front of the national mosque leaving four people injured.

Paltan police filed the case accusing 29 BNP leaders and activists including Fakhrul, Rafiqul Islam Miah and Aman Ullah Aman.

In the case, Standing Committee member Rafiqul and Joint Secretary General Aman secured anticipatory bail from the High Court.
