Nizami’s son, two lawyers meet him

Death row convict and war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami’s son Nazim Momen and his two lawyers Matiur Rahman Akand and Afaz Uddin met him at Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur yesterday.

Superintendent of Jail Mizanur Rahman confirmed this to the Dhaka Tribune and said: “Upon their application, we arranged the meeting at the room of Deputy Jailer Shah Mohammad.”

They talked about filing an appeal with the Supreme Court against Nizami’s death penalty and received instructions from him about it, he said, declining to go into details about the talks.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on October 29 handed down death penalty to Nizami on four charges of war crimes including killings of intellectuals at the fag end of the 1971 Liberation War.

He was also awarded life sentence in four other charges in the historic trial.

Nizami, though claimed to be an Islamic scholar, misinterpreted the Quran to encourage his followers to conduct a massive genocide, the court had said in its verdict.
