Fakhrul: Government bars BNP from reorganising

The BNP yesterday alleged that the government was obstructing the party’s reorganisation process by arresting the opposition leaders and activists, filing false cases against them and vandalising the party office using its agents.

“The process to reorganise the party is going on as part of intensifying the movement to restore people’s voting rights and democracy in the country. But the government is arresting our leaders and activists on false cases so that we cannot reorganise the party,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, party’s acting secretary general, said.

Placing wreaths at the grave of BNP founder and late president Ziaur Rahman, the spokesperson of the party said, “The government is using its agents to vandalise the party office and obstruct the reorganisation process of the party. Jubo Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal was recently arrested on a false case.”

The BNP leader alleged that the government was doing so as the BNP could not launch any movement. “But we want to say clearly that it would not be possible for the government to stop the movement through repression.”

Fakhrul placed wreaths at the Zia’s grave to mark the founding anniversary of Jubo Dal, youth front of the BNP. Hundreds of Jubo Dal leaders and activists also placed wreaths at the grave and  offered prayers.

Alal was arrested at his residence along with 60 leaders and activists. Later, he was placed on a three-day remand.

Fakhrul asked the government to see its face in the mirror. “Alal is a former lawmaker. The government’s fascist image has been exposed through his arrest.”
