The Awami League has served a show cause notice to former minister Abdul Latif Siddique, asking him to explain why he should not be expelled from the party permanently.
AL Office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
He said: “Latif Siddique has been asked to reply to the show cause notice within seven days of receiving it.”
The show cause notice, which has been issued by the registered post from the capital's Jigatala post office on Tuesday, was sent to Latif's Kalihati house.”
Golap further said: “The notice, signed by AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, has been served asking why he should not be expelled from the party permanently.”
“The final decision on his permanent expulsion from the party will be taken at the AL Central Working Committee meeting at Ganabhaban on October 24,” he added.
While addressing a programme in the US on September 28, Latif made derogatory remarks on Hajj, Tablighi Jamaat and the prime minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
The minister’s “derogatory” comments on Hajj have sparked widespread criticism both at home and abroad.
Following the issue, the government sacked the minister from the cabinet on October 12. The Awami League also removed Latif from its presidium body.
