The electoral enquiry committee has found evidences of violation of the electoral code of conduct by four people including lawmaker Shamim Osman in the Narayanganj 5 by-election.

The commission secretariat received the probe report but it is yet to place it at the full commission meeting, a senior EC official yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune.

The official said the enquiry committee has sent the probe report to the commission this week.

“We will present the report before the commission soon,” a Senior Assistant Secretary of the law wing of the EC Mosharaf Hossain said.

The report was signed by committee Chairman Habiba Mandal, joint district judge of Narayanganj and member of the committee Assistant Judge Muhammad Mazharul Islam.

Those who violated the electoral code of conduct in the Narayanganj by-poll as per the report are Narayanganj 4 constituency MP Shamim Osman, Assistant Superintendent of police Bashir Uddin, Major Sohel from the Rab 11 and Madanpur Union Parishad Chairman Abdus Salam.

On June 26 allegations of threatening a police official by Shamim Osman during the poll was aired on different TV channels and published in newspapers.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said the electoral enquiry committee would investigate the matter and the commission would take action as per the report.

The committee investigated the allegation as per the television and newspaper reports as there was no specific allegation against the accused.

An election commissioner said the commission would decide on the matter after examining the report.

The Narayanganj 5 parliamentary constituency fell vacant following the death of MP Nasim Osman.

Nasim’s brother Selim Osman won the by-election on June 26 from the parliamentary seat.
