A senior Awami League leader of US chapter was strangled to death in New York city in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The deceased was Nazmul Islam, vice-president of US chapter Awami League.
Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN Abdul Momen told the Dhaka Tribune over telephone that Nazmul visited Bangladesh about 10 days ago and met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“I saw his body that bore injury marks to forehead, below eyes and above nose,” Momen said.
“Nazmul’s mother told us that he received a phone call around 11 Tuesday night and was speaking in Bangla and having a political conversation.”
He left the house hastily after receiving the phone call and his body was found four hours later, two blocks from his home, Momen said.
“Police recovered his cellphone and are investigating the murder.”
He made two emergency phone calls to 911 before he was killed, Momen said.
His Namaz-e-Janaza was held Friday and he was buried in a New York.
Nazmul, a divorcee, lived with his mother and sister in New York. He also had one son and one daughter.
He left Bangladesh in 1981 and since then he had been living in the USA.
