Law minister: Trial of Jamaat not possible

Law Minister Anisul Huq has said the trial of Jamaat-e-Islami was not possible under the existing law.

He said: “The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Act 1973 has no provision under which a political party can be tried. “

He made the remarks while talking to Independent Television at his office on Thursday afternoon.

Anisul strongly denies any chance of his party's alliance with Jamaat in the future

He said: “Before trying Jamaat, we have to consider whether the new trial process will influence the Supreme Court hearing on Jamaat's registration. We have to move forward considering the situation.”

Mentioning that the government has already brought the top leaders of the party under trial for their crimes against humanity, the minister said: “We have already tried the top Jamaat leaders, who committed crimes against humanity during the liberation war. They already have punished for their offences.”

“If we punish them again, we need to consider the issue whether the previous judgement will be conflicting with the new judgement.”

Anisul strongly denied any chance of his party's alliance with Jamaat in the future.
