Blockade over UP chairman detention

The agitated supporters have blocked the Dhaka-Dinajpur Highway on Thursaday afternoon, protesting the detention of an Union Parishad chairman.

Witnesses said the supporters of Raynagar Union Parishad Chairman Firoz Ahmed Rizu block the highway near Mahastan area at 5pm as police held him for his alleged involvement with a killing.

Assistant Superintendent of district Police Gaziur Rahman said: “The supporters of the UP chairman block the highway as police detained him.

We are going to the spot to take the situation under control,” he added.

The detained UP Chairman Firoz Ahmed was later shown arrested in the case filed over the murder of a youth, Superintendent of Police Mozammel Hoque said.

Earlier in the day, the bullet-hit body of a youth, Shiplu, has been found in Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Locals claimed that Shiplu was a local Jubo League activists. However, JL leaders refused the claim.

Later, police detained Rizu for his alleged involvement with the “murder.”

Superintendent of district Police Mozammel Haque said: “We have held Rizu for quizzing as we have got information that he has link with the murder.

Detailed information in this regard will be available after investigation,” he added.
