City BNP joint convener arrested in capital

Dhaka City unit BNP Joint Convener and former councilor of Ward-27 of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Anwaruzzaman Anwar was arrested with 10 crude bombs from the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Wednesday afternoon.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) officials claimed that they arrested the 57-year-old BNP joint convener for his alleged involvement with the recent incidents of explosions, arson and vandalism carried out in the capital.

“Anwaruzzaman was one of the masterminds of the recent bomb attacks, arson and vandalism acts carried out in the capital. He also had been leading such subversive acts as a ring leader”, said Colonel Ziaul Ahsan, additional director general (Operation) of Rab.

He said a team of Rab-2 arrested Anwaruzzaman, with 10 crude bombs from the house of one Md Yusuf at Satmasjid Housing in Mohammadpur.

Rab-2 official said acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab-2 personnel conducted a raid at a house on Road-5 in Satmasjid Housing and arrested the BNP leader around 3pm.

“On information extracted from the former ward councilor, Rab men recovered 10 bombs from his house”, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police and also the operation officer of Rab-2 Raihanuddin Khan.

He added: “After primary interrogation, he would be handed over to Sher-e-Banglanagar police station.”

In another drive, police arrested two suspected criminals with some 5kgs of explosives and bomb making materials from a shanty in the capital’s Bhashantek early in the morning.

The arrestees are Jamal Uddin alias Chikna Jamal, 35, and Zakiir Hossain, 26.

Meanwhile, police seized sulfur, crushed stone, 40 empty cans of beer and various other materials.
