Police used force to dispel pickets in Rajshahi city Sunday morning during a nationwide hartal of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Witnesses said supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami, wielding a banner, attempted to block a road in Binodpur area and set it on fire around 7:20am.
They hurled crude bombs at law enforcers when police intervened, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (East) Proloy Chishim told the Dhaka Tribune.
However, the crude bombs did not hurt anyone. The clashes pursued for about 20 minutes, he said.
Police fired short-gun shells and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the pickets, he said. No one could be nabbed from the scene.
Jamaat called a nationwide hartal for Sunday in protest against the execution of their leader, “Butcher of Mirpur,” Abdul Quader Molla.
