At least four people died and 50 were injured after, according to witnesses, law enforcers opened live gunfire during a clash with opposition supporters in Lakshmipur, Thursday.
One person is said to have gone missing and at least 20 people were shot at the scene. The dead bodies were being kept at Lokhhipur Sadar Hospital.
Three of the deceased were able to be identified, they were: a local ward BNP President Mahbub Alam, college student Shihab Hossain and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Suman.
District Jubo Dal Joint General Secretary Iqbal Mahmud Jewel was said to have been missing with bullet wounds.
The local BNP unit called a general shutdown in the district in protest the incident.
Lokkhipur Sadar Hospital Senior Staff Nurse Alamgir Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that three of the clash victims succumed undergoing treatments at the hospital.
“One more had died before brought in. Now, there are 19 people, shot during the clash, taking treatments at the hospital,” he added.
However, no official quotes could be obtained over what witnesses said described as massive violence within the area.
Clashes ensued when police intervened with a procession of the local opposition supporters in Chakbazar, Lokkhipur Sadar in the morning, witnesses said.
During the clashes, news that some local BNP leaders were shot during ignited further heat in the area.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and police said to have opened live gunfire at the scene. However, there was no official quote for the incident, but Dhaka Tribune has photos of the four deceased.
