BNP leader's custodial death, hartal in Cox's Bazar Sunday

District unit BNP called a daylong hartal in Cox's Bazar for Sunday alleging death of a party leader under torture in police custody.

Cox's Bazar BNP General Secretary Shamim Ara Swapna called the hartal on Friday. “Jubo Dal leader Abdul Halim tortured and killed in police custody.”

District Jubo Dal Organising Secretary Abdul Halim died undergoing treatments at a hospital Thursday 10:30pm, Chakaria police Officer-in-Charge Ranajit Kumar Barua said.

However, he denied any torture. “Halim was held over vandalism allegations during November 26 blockade. He later became ill and was admitted to a hospital where he succumbed.”

Deceased Halim was the son of Hazi Abbas Uddin from Baniarchara under Chakaria upazila.

He died while attending treatments at Christian Memorial Hospital in Dulhazarar Mamulghat area.
