Jamaat and the members of the 18-party alliance are observing the shutdown in protest of the killing of Abdul Hye Siddiqui Bulbul, Jamaat’s New Town Unit Secretary who was gunned down by assailants at his residence on Wednesday.
The hartal supporters blocked roads and brought out processions in different areas of the district.

Jessore Assistant Superintendent of Police Reshma Sharmin told the Dhaka Tribune that the hartal was being observed peacefully.
She said: “The killers could not be identified and no one was arrested in connection with the killing.”
