BNP calls hartal in Chittagong Tuesday

A 6am-6pm hartal has been called in the distrcit of Chittagong for Tuesday to protest the Swandip incident where the son of a BNP member of parliament was shot.

The BNP's Chittagong unit President Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the shutdown at a protest programme on Monday.

He warned of tougher moves if the government failed to take action against the Swandip violence.

On Sunday, Awami League and the BNP were engaged in daylong clashes on an island in Swandip. The house of Chittagong-13 MP Mostafa Kamal Pasha was attacked and burned.

His son, Iqbal Pasha Javed, was shot on his chest. Four other people were also shot during the fire fight.

Earlier on Sunday, Jamaat-e-Islami staged a daylong hartal in Chittagong where two vehicles were burned and crude bombs were set off sporadically.

Chittagong hosts the major port in Bangladesh where most of the import-export shipping businesses take place.

Strings of hartals in successive weeks have negatively impacted activities at the port.
