BNP Chairperson and leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia Saturday called upon the Hindu community to work together for betterment of the country.
“There was a misconception that BNP distanced itself with the minority community, but it is not true. We believe in communal harmony and unity. We will strengthen relations whenever we will return to power,” she said.
“Let’s come forward and unite and show to others that we can also promote development.”
Khaleda said: “We have renovated many temples while we were in power. We have rebuilt Ramna Kali Mandir and we also set up temple-based library.”
Exchanging greetings with the leaders of the Hindu community at Ladies Club in the capital on the occasion of Durga Puja, Khaleda said Bangladesh is a land of communal harmony.
“People of all religions live here together. Every religion has equal right and all are citizens of Bangladesh,” she said.
Hundreds of Hindu community people met with the leader of the opposition to exchange greetings.
The former premier reiterated that every religion in Bangladesh has equal right and if any religion comes under attack, stern action will be taken.
Asked about the Prime Minister’s speech and Dhaka Metropolitan Police ban on meetings and rallies, Khaleda said they would give their opinion in this regard after holding meeting with the standing committee members and the leaders of BNP-led 18-party alliances.
BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, ASM Hannan Shah and other senior leaders of the party were present.
