Jamaat-e-Islami and its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out processions, engaged in vandalism, blasted handmade bombs and clashed with law enforcers in the capital on Thursday.
Meanwhile, police detained seven individuals affiliated with an Islamist organisation from Segunbagicha for holding a meeting without permission.
Police and witnesses said Shibir brought out processions in Gulshan, Mohakhali, Kamalapur, Moghbazar, Mirpur, Jatrabari and other areas around the capital at 9am demanding release of their leaders detained for war crimes.
They also demanded abolishing the International Crimes Tribunal.
Clashes ensued when police intervened in the Mohakhali and Kamalapur areas. Several handmade bombs were blasted and vehicles were vandalised at the scene.
Shibir brought out a procession near Brac University in Mohakhali and blasted three handmade bombs while vandalising some vehicles at around 9:30am.
They pelted bricks when police intervened, while Banani police managed to detain two Shibir men – Anisur Rahman and Shah Paran – from the spot.
Another cat-and-mouse chase occurred near the Mohakhali flyover until the police fired blank shots to disperse the Shibir supporters.
Khandakar Lutful Kabir, Deputy Commissioner of Gulshan Division, said the two of the detained had several SMSs in their mobile phones mentioning subversive activities.
Motijheel police said Shibir supporters brought out a procession at Kamalapur where they hurled several handmade bombs towards law enforcers.
They vandalised vehicles and fled when the police intervened.
Seven of an Islamist organisation held
Police held seven individuals from “Islami Somaj”, including its chief, from a hotel in Segunbagicha at 1pm.
Officer-in-charge (investigation) of Shahbagh police, Abdul Jalil, led the raid.
The detainees are Moulana Humayun Kabir, chief of “Islami Somaj”m its members Abu Zafar Mohammmad Iqbal, Solaiman Kabir, Md Habibuzzaman, Amir Hossain, Yusuf Hossain and Md Yiasin.
The OC said he did not know of the existence of this organisation, “They were holding a meeting without permission.”
