Shibir presses Chhatra Dal men to oppose rape

Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Central Office Secretary, Sibgatullah Sibga, has urged Chhatra Dal activists to take a stand against rape, saying rapists are despised by all.

He also expressed hope that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and senior Chhatra Dal leaders would address the issue.

Sibga made the comments on Wednesday afternoon while addressing a protest rally organized by Shibir’s Dhaka South City unit near the north gate of Baitul Mukarram.

Earlier, Shibir activists brought out a procession from Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar, chanting slogans against Chhatra Dal.

He alleged that while the Awami League and its student wing Chhatra League had previously been accused of rape, Chhatra Dal is now engaging in similar acts. He further accused Chhatra Dal leaders of threatening to slaughter Shibir activists—a slogan he said was once used by Chhatra League.

Holding them responsible if such killings occur, he claimed: “There are conspiracies surrounding the Ducsu election. As part of this, a faction has staged protests in front of the court. But no conspiracy will succeed.”

Sibga also alleged that four Shibir-backed female Ducsu candidates have faced cyberbullying, while some teachers are attempting to foil the election.

Central International Affairs Secretary Mutasim Billah Shahedi echoed the accusations, saying Chhatra Dal was trying to shift blame and undermine the Ducsu polls. He alleged that the organization had once posted, then deleted, a threat to slaughter Shibir activists.

The tensions come after a female student filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking the cancellation of Shibir-backed Ducsu GS candidate SM Farhad.

Following this, sociology student Ali Hossain allegedly threatened the petitioner with gang rape. Chhatra Dal staged a campus protest on Tuesday, condemning the incident, during which Shibir claimed “extreme slogans” were raised against them.

In response, Shibir announced Wednesday’s rally and urged all parties to act responsibly to maintain social peace and security.
