Students at Jahangirnagar University organized a solidarity rally under the banner of the “Anti-Discrimination Student Movement”.
The rally was attended by teachers from various departments and students from several nearby private universities.
The gathering took place at the university’s Shahid Minar at 4:30pm on Wednesday.
After a one-hour rally, the students marched from the Shahid Minar to the main gate and then to the Prantik gate.
During the event, attendees vowed to thwart any conspiracies by the Awami League on August 15.
During the rally, Professor Lutful Elahi from the History Department spoke out about the attack on students by the Chhatra League on the night of July 15.
He criticized the vice-chancellor for not opening the gate to provide refuge to the students and for celebrating with his supporters while students were being attacked.
Professor Elahi recounted his own efforts to rescue the students by contacting colleagues and demanding their safety, but found the vice-chancellor and some faculty members had already left, allowing the attackers to enter.
He called for the resignation of those responsible and for legal action against them.
In his closing remarks, Professor Dr Mohammad Shamsul Alam from the Government and Politics Department condemned the misrule of the Awami League from 1972 to 1975, highlighting the current government's corruption and mismanagement.
He praised the student movement for its vigilance and announced a planned road march by former prime minister from India, which they intend to prevent.
He emphasized the importance of unity across religious, ethnic, and national lines.
The protesters also expressed strong condemnation of attacks on minorities across the country and criticized the use of such attacks for political gain.
They declared their commitment to safeguarding religious sites such as temples and churches.
Additionally, they announced plans for a peaceful demonstration at various university spots starting from 10am the following day to prevent further violence.
