Awami League-nominated candidate for Faridpur-3 (Sadar) constituency Shamim Haque has submitted an application to the Election Commission (EC), seeking cancellation of independent candidate AK Azad’s candidature over allegations of holding dual citizenship and hiding information on wealth in the affidavit.
Though the application was submitted on Saturday, it came to light on Sunday.
In the application sent to the EC, Shamim Haque, also president of the district unit of Awami League, alleged that AK Azad gave false information regarding citizenship, wealth, and dependents in the submitted affidavit.
The Awami League candidate said: “I hope the EC will make the right decision, verifying all (allegations).”
Defying the allegations, AK Azad, a renowned industrialist, said that he does not have citizenship of any other country besides Bangladesh.
He has no foreign bank accounts and the information he gave is a hundred percent authentic, the independent candidate added.
On December 5, Faridpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) and also Returning Officer Kamrul Ahsan Talukder declared the nomination papers of the Awami League candidate valid during the scrutiny, despite objection from the independent candidate.
The returning officer defended the matter, saying that the complainant could not submit any document in favour of the allegations.
Last Friday, AK Azad submitted the application to the EC, alleging the Awami League candidate to be a Dutch citizen.
