BNP men flee Madhupur-Dhanbari area

More than 300 BNP leaders and activists fled the Madhupur-Dhanbari area of the district to avoid an arrest; alleged BNP leaders at a press conference at Tangail press club Sunday evening.

They also alleged that hundreds of vehicles were vandalised and torched in the August-15 violence led by Food Minister Abdur Razzak.

The Madhupur BNP office was also vandalised at that time and cases against 200 BNP leaders and activists were filed with the Madhupur police station.

The Madhupur upazila unit BNP president Zakir Hossain, said police raided more than 50 houses of BNP activists in the areas.

“They even raided different business establishments belonging to BNP members just to harass them,” he added.

BNP executive member and Dhanbari unit president Fakir Mahbub Anam Swapon alleged that a group of Awami League activists attacked them with lethal weapons and injured more than 50 BNP men in the evening of August 11 when he was exchanging Eid ul-Fitr greetings with people.

He also alleged that even police denied the cases filed against the attackers.

The Awami League activists filed a case accusing 125 BNP men instead, he said, adding that the food minister was also involved in the anarchy.

The Tangail district unit BNP secretary Shamsul Alom Tofa, vice president Shamol Hore, organising secretary Forhad Iqbal and forest and environment secretary Mirza Shaheen spoke at the press conference.

Earlier, at least 50 people including eight police men were injured in a clash between BNP activists and law enforcers in Madhupur, Tangail on 15 August following the arrest of a local municipality mayor.

The supporters of detained Mayor Sarkar Shahid who is also general secretary of the Madhupur upazila unit of BNP, torched a police pickup van and a motorcycle during the clash.

The agitated opposition activists put barricade on the Tangail-Mymensingh road and vandalised over 100 vehicles including that of the upazila nirbahi officer and upazila parishad chairman in Madhupur.

Police sprayed rubber bullets and tear shells to disperse the agitators while vehicular movements remained suspended for two hours.
