BNP men accused of killing Lalmonirhat Sramik League activist

An activist of Sramik League, the labour wing of the Awami League, was reportedly killed in an attack by leaders and activists of the BNP during its nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal in the Mahendranagar area of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila on Sunday.

The deceased was Jahangir Hossain, 50, an activist of the Gokunda unit of Sramik League and son of Azizar Rahman of the area.

Witnesses said local leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies held a procession against the daylong hartal in the morning.

When the procession reached the Burirbazar Mosque area, the police stopped them. At one stage, some BNP activists started throwing brickbats targeting police officers and Awami League men, resulting in a chase and counter chase.

Later, some BNP men beat up Jahangir and stabbed him with a sharp weapon, leaving him injured, they added.

Jahangir was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital and the doctor on duty declared him dead, said Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar police station.

Two activists of the Awami League were also injured in the attack and they are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

No complaint has been lodged yet, said the OC.
