A clash broke out on Sunday between two factions of Chhatra Dal, student wing of BNP, during a rally in front of the party’s Naya Paltan central office, leaving several leaders and activists injured.
The rally aimed to demand the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's release and better treatment abroad.
During BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul’s speech, some Chhatra Dal members attacked their opponents with sticks at the rally. BNP leaders, including Mirza Abbas and Sultan Salauddin Tuku, tried to stop the fight, but several BNP leaders and activists were injured.
Following the clash, four Chhatra Dal members received treatment at Islami Bank Central Hospital.
Mirza Fakhrul halted his speech and said: 'Those who are fighting are agents of the government. They are not friends of BNP or Chhatra Dal.”
BNP's Student Affairs Secretary, Rakibul Islam Bakul, led the attack on Chhatra Dal leaders and activists of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP, specifically those from the group led by Member Secretary Aminul Haque.
Chhatra Dal members complained that the attack was carried out under the leadership of Nasir Uddin Nasir, the BNP vice-president and a follower of Bakul.
However, the BNP has not issued any statement regarding who instigated the clashes and why.
